Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province in north-western China, opened a “high-capacity” BRT system. This system, which opened in December last year, is the 3rd “high-capacity” BRT system in Asia and the second one in China after Guangzhou. Furthermore it is the first system worldwide, which is based on a split station concept with BRT buses in the same direction stopping on both sides of a platform.
The project is the first BRT system financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), loaning US$150 million toward urban transport in Lanzhou, and supported by the Institute for Transportation & Development Policy (ITDP).
