On the 21st of September 2014, MIT Group launched the ever first carsharing pilot project in Yantai, Shangdong province. The carsharing system GX-ZUCHE provides 100 cars (including 10 electric vehicles) at 50 carsharing stations, which are distributed throughout the city area. The launching event of the carsharing pilot project on September 21 was followed by a workshop on carsharing in China under the participation from Ministry of Transport (MoT), Chinese Road Transport Association (CRTA), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Yantai Transportation Department, Sinopec and China Unicom.
Within the scope of the workshop, Daniel Bongardt, Project Director at GIZ, gave a presentation
on the development and benefits of carsharing, including its increasing relevance for sustainable urban transport and GIZ’s project activities related to this new mobility service. Further topics discussed during the workshop were the positioning of carsharing in China’s transport sector and the exchange of international carsharing experiences. The workshop gave many insights into the current situation of carsharing in China and facilitated fruitful discussions on the future development of this mobility service.
Carsharing cannot only contribute to a decrease in private car ownership and vehicle kilometres travelled, but also to the integration of electric vehicles in sustainable urban transport. For this reason, GIZ’s Sino-German Cooperation Project on Electro-Mobility and Climate Protection is engaged in the promotion of this new mobility service in China. The project is funded through the International Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB).
